[835] Caleb's will was made 8 January 1699, and proved 24 February 1752. He graduatedfrom Harvard College in 1692, and went to Salisbury in March, 1696, and was ordained minister of the first parish 9 November 1698. He was one of the numeroussigners of documents in 1745, unfavorable to the itinerary of Whitfield, and endorsing the proceedings of Harvard College in 1744 in relation to his career. He was pastor of the Salisbury Church during a period of 56 years. "We know notthe man in the County of Essex," says the eminent preacher of his funeral sermon, "who has moulded a broader and deeper influence on the minds of the people than this venerable divine."
The Boston Evening Post stated: " He was of excellent natural parts, judgment and memory which so rarely meet, yet met in him inso eminent degree that it was not easy to say in which he excelled, and at thesame time, he had the easiest and happiest temper, and most benign soul. He was alearned, solid divine, and of exemplary conversation, condescending, prudent, benevolent and a wise counsellor, remarkable for hospitality."
