"James Cudworth, like all of the young men of the Scituate settlement,

endowed.  James at an early age joined the militia, and in 1652 at the
 
age of 17 was a captain.  In 1654-5 he married Mary Howland, daughter of
 
Henry, and niece of John (the pilgrim of the Mayflower).  James left no
 
will and no division of property, but the Court appointed Mary his
