"The Cudworths were an old Lancashire family descended from John Cudworth of Werueth, who
had married Margery, daughter of Richard Oldham, lord of the manor of Oldham. Their great-
great-great-grandson, Ralph Cudworth of Werneth Hall, married Jane daughter of Aurthur
Ashton of Rochdale. A second son of this union was Rev. Ralph Cudworth, who was a Fellow
of Emmanuel College, Cambridge."

(A family tree of the Cudworths is given on page 80. Raufe, son of Raufe of Werneth and
Jane Ashton, is credited with "2 sonne". Rauf of Werneth is said the son of Raufe and
Agnes, daughter of Allexander Leyes of Ashton-under-Lyne. That Rauf is said son of John of
Werneth and Elyza, daughter of Thomas Chetham of Nuthurst.)
