There is some argument over the identity of John Tooker's first wife. Some claim it to be Mary Johnson, others,
including apparently Clarence Torrey, a woman named Sarah. The records of the town of Brookhaven, which were
kept by John Tooker himself, state that his wife Sarah died on 08 Sep 1685.

"Richard Smith (Richard), born probably in 1645, died 1720. He was granted a license
for marriage 20 Jne 1670, by the Court of Assize...The license indicates a first
marriage by which there was probably no issue. Richard Smith married (2) Hannah,
daughter of John Tooker, of Southold. Her sister, Ruth Tooker, had married Daniel
Smith (9), Richard's youngest brother. John Tooker came from England. His first wife
was Mary Johnson, and his second wife was Hannah, daughter of Barnabas Wines and
widow of John Elton, of Southold. In the will of John Tooker, of Southold, dated 24
April 1688, his wife, Hannah is mentioned and his daughter, Hannah Tooker. She and
her sister Ruth were daughters by the first marriage."
