[93] (Jefferson county, KS was organized in 1855, and the city of Oskaloosa was formed
in 1856. Kansas was admitted as a territory in 1854 and as a state in 1861.)

A column entitled "Territorial Days in Oskaloosa," by Francis Henry Roberts,
started in the Oskaloosa Independent, July 27, 1933. Mr. Roberts' recollections
in a former column, "Early Days in Oskaloosa," dated from the summer of 1862.
Frank Roberts served one term as mayor of Oskaloosa, and two as president of
the Kansas State Editorial Association.
