Matthew was a wheelwright, and took an active and prominent part in the affairsof the town. Selectman 13 times between 1661 and 1695; freeman, 1679; was known as -Sergeant-, as -Cornet-, and later as -Lieutenant-. He resided at HinghamCentre- over the river -. He died without issue 9 January 1701. In his will of28 December 1700, after providing for his wife, he leaves his estate to his nephew, Matthew Cushing who had lived with him.
