[5085] "The Probable Identity of Ruth Dodge, Wife of Richard Ingersoll..."
Janna Bennington Larson
The American Genealogist, v79, p278 (Oct 2004)
"Capt. John Dodge was apparently baptized at Salem, Massachusetts, on 25 December
1636, son of William Dodge. He died at Beverly on 14 January 1722/3. He married first in
Salem on 10 [blank] 1659 Sarah Proctor, daughter of John and Martha (Harper) Proctor.
Sarah died about 1679, and John married second Elizabeth (---) WOODBURY, widow of
John Woodbury."

"Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County, Massachusetts"
Salem, MA, 1911-1975
Volume 5, Page 195: "...William Dodge, Sr., and John Proctor, Sr., made up the match
between John Dodge and Sarah Procter, son and daughter of Dodge and Procter..."

"The English Origin of George Giddings of Ipswich, Massachusetts"
David L. Greene
NEHGR v135 p274 (Oct 1981)
p285: "Giddings-Proctor Addendum...John Proctor married Martha Harper at Groton,
co. Suffolk, 1 June 1630. Two children were baptized at Assington, co. Suffolk; John
(baptized 9 October 1631) and Marie (baptized 17 October 1633)."

"Genealogical Gleanings in England: Additional Notes
About the Proctor Family"
Henry F. Waters
NEHGR, v51 p409 (July 1897)
"The first John Proctor, of Ipswich (I doubt if he ever lived in Salem) must have died before
11 Oct. 1672, when an inventory of his estate was taken. His will, as Savage says, names wife
Martha, grandchildren Martha Hartley and John Hadley, daughters Martha White, Abigail
Varney, Sarah Dodge and Hannah Weden and sons John, Joseph and Benjamin. Martha was
probably the wife of James White (who was present in jail when the second John Proctor
made his will), Abigail was the wife of Thomas Varney and Sarah was the wife of John Dodge
(son of William Dodge senior)."

"A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England"
James Savage
Pub. Boston, 1860-1862
Repub. Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, MD, 1998
v3, pp489-490: "JOHN, Ipswich, came, 1635, aged 40 from London in the Susan and Ellen,
with w. Martha, 28; and ch. John,3; and Mary, 1; and in few yrs. was sett. at Salem. His
w. d. 13 June 1659; but he took sec. w. of the same bapt. name, wh. outliv. him. His will

(Note that Savage is wrong about the death of Martha and the existence of a second wife.
See NEHGR v51 p409.)
