was apprenticed to this brother, Humphrey Howland, in London and his name is found on the Roll

of Drapers Company, 1 October 1623. But less than ten years later, Henry arrived in Plymouth

where he was taxed 25 March 1633. John's oldest brother, Arthur Howland, soon followed his younger

brothers to New England and was listed by Thomas Lechford, 28 August 1640, as 'of Duxbury in New

England, Planter'".

"Henry Howland, son of Henry, was born before 1613 - probably at Fenstanton, county

Huntingdon, England - and died at Duxbury, Massachusetts, on 1 "leventh month" [January]

1670/71. He was apprenticed on 1 October 1623 to his brother, Humphrey Howland, in London

but appears not to have completed his apprenticeship. Henry married, probably in England,

to Mary [-----]. On 16 6m [August] 1674, there died in Duxbury "Mary Howland who had bin

the wife of Hennery." Although this wife is called Mary Newland by several writers, no

evidence for her surname has been located in a contemporary record."

"Henry Howland married Mary Newland, a sister of William Newland who came

from Lynn in 1637 and settled in Sandwich. She and her brother became Quakers, and

she suffered with her family the persecution of the Court. I have noticed in my investigations

that it is the woman of a household who controls the religious attitude of her family. Her

husband in most cases simply follows suit. Henry Howland died in Duxbury, January 17,

1671, and his widow died also in Duxbury, June 17, 1674."
