A.L. Simmons Dies; Funeral Friday at 9

Albert L. Simmons, 67, lifetime resident of Leavenworth, died late
Tuesday afternoon at the V.A. Center following an extended illness.

He was born Aug. 4, 1891, in Leavenworth, a son of Joel and Mary
Ellen Simmons. On Sept. 26, 1917 he married Miss Elizabeth K. Cameron
at Sacred Heart Church. He was an Army veteran of World War I.

For 22 years he was assistant superintendent at the Abernathy
Furniture Factory and for 23 years he was superintendent at the
U.S. Penitentiary furniture factory. He held this position until
his retirement several years ago.

He was a member of the Old Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
Church, and the American Legion.

Surviving is his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Simmons of the home, 520
Kiowa; two daughters, Mrs. Harold Needham, Tonganoxie, and Mrs.
John McAdams, Bethesda, Md.; one son, Albert L. Simmons, Jr., Denver,
Colo.; one sister, Mrs. Harold Ferguson, Terre Haute, Ind., and 
five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday at 9 a.m. at the Old Cathedral
with the Very Rev. Msgr. A.M. Harvey officiating. Interment will
be in the National Cemetery, Ft. Leavenworth.

Members of the Old Catherdral Altar Society and friends will recite
the Rosary at 8 p.m. at the Sumpter Funeral Chapel.

The 77-Year Old Leavenworth Native Was Ill Two Days -
Funeral Monday

Mrs. Catherine Cameron, 77 years of age, 511 Vine street, died
at two o'clock this morning at St. John's hospital after an 
illness of two days.

Born at Leavenworth, September 4, 1864, Mrs. Cameron was a
daughter of Morris and Bridget Kennedy, pioneer residents.
All her life had been spent here. She was a member of the
Sacred Heart parish.

Her marriage to Hugh Cameron was April 28, 1884, and was 
celebrated at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
Mr. Cameron died in 1922.

Surviving are five sons, John Cameron, home address; Walter
F. Cameron and Eugene Cameron, Kansas City, Mo.; William
Cameron, Des Moines, Ia.; Elmer Cameron, 115 Fifth avenue;
four daughters, Mrs. Lee Simmons, 520 Kiowa street; Mrs. 
M.A. Sterling, formerly of Kansas City, Mo., and now of
Corpus Christi, Tex.; Mrs. F.W. Hines, Salt Lake City;
Mrs. W.W. Woddy, Pharr, Tex.; one brother, E.M. Kennedy,
Riverside, Ill.; and 16 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at nine o'clock Monday morning
at the Sacred Heart church, the Rev. Fr. Selting, pastor,
officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary cemetery.

The body is at the O'Donnell funeral chapel.

Eleanor J. Needham died Sunday Jan. 2, 2000, at her home in Leavenworth.
She was 72. 

Mrs. Needham was born Jan. 24, 1927, the daughter of Albert and
Elizabeth Cameron Simmons. 

She graduated from St. Mary's Academy and began working at Fort
Leavenworth with the Military Review. She moved to Bell Hall and became
an editor, and retired at CACDA as an editor and technical writer in
1983. 

She was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the Altar
Society, Saint John Hospital Guild, an active worker at the information
desk, Saint John Lifeline and The Place. She married Harold Needham May
22, 1954, at the old Cathedral in Leavenworth. He survives of the home. 

She is also survived by two sons, Vince Needham, Manhattan, and Jim
Needham, Leavenworth; a brother, Albert "Bill" Simmons, Clayton, Calif.;
and one sister, Betty Lee McAdams, Bethesda, Md. 

Friends may call after 3 p.m. today at the Belden-Sexton- Sumpter
Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. A parish rosary will
be recited at 6:30 p.m. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of
the Immaculate Conception with the Rev. Terrence Cyr, O.Carm.
officiating. 

Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. 

Memorial donations may be given to the Kansas City Hospice.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Eleanor J. Needham, 72, Leavenworth,
will be at 10 a.m. today at the Church of the Immaculate Conception
with the Rev. Torrence Cyr officiating. Burial will be in Mount
Calvary Cemetery.

Mrs. Needham died Sunday, Jan, 2, at her home.

She was born Jan. 24, 1927 in Leavenworth, the daughter of Albert
and Elizabeth Cameron Simmons. She graduated from the St. Mary's

Mrs. Simmons Is Dead at Age 75

Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth K. Simmons, 75, 520 Kiowa, who
died Friday afternoon at St. John Hospital after an illness of two
days, will be held at 9 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church.
The Rt. Rev. Msgr. A.M. Harvey, pastor, will officiate. Burial
will be in the National Cemetery, Ft. Leavenworth.

Born Oct. 27, 1890, in Leavenworth, Mrs. Simmons was the daughter
of Hugh and Catherine Cameron. On Sept. 26, 1917, at the Sacred
Heart Church, she was married to Albert L. Simmons. Mr. Simmons
died in 1958.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth McAdams, Bethesda, Md.,
and Mrs. Eleanor Needham, 520 Kiowa; a son, Albert Simmons, Jr.,
Concord, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Agnes Woody, Dallas, Tex., and
Mrs. Frank Hines, Salt Lake City, Utah; three brothers, William 
Cameron, Des Moines, Iowa, and Eugene Cameron, and Elmer Cameron,
both of Kansas City, Mo., and nine grandchildren.

Friends and members of the Immaculate Conception Church will
recite the Rosary at 8 p.m. Monday at the Sumpter Funeral Chapel.
The body is at the chapel.

Harold A. Ferguson, 80, 1102 Elizabeth Lane, died at 11 p.m.
Saturday in Regional Hospital. He was a retired employee of 
the federal prison and of Froderman Chevrolet. He was born
March 13, 1904, in Kansas to Charles and Rose Duffin Ferguson.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; five sons, Harold, Jr., 
Jacksonville, Fla., James, Champaign, Ill., Jerold, Greenwood,
Charles, Terre Haute, and Robert, Pittsboro; two daughters,
Joan Fentem, Rantoul, Ill., and Julie Elliott, Tolono, Ill;
22 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was a 
member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus,
National Association of Retired Federal Employees, American
Association of Retired People and past president of the South
Side Optimist Club. Services are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. 
Tuesday in DeBaun Funeral Home, followed by funeral Mass at
10 a.m. in the St. Benedict's Catholic Church, with the Rev.
Kent Biergans officiating. Burial is in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation is 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. today, with 
rosary at 7:30.

Death caused by apoplexy came suddenly early yesterday evening
to Hugh Cameron, 70 years old, 511 Vine street, as he was walking
past the corner of Fifth and Spruce streets. Mr. Cameron was returning
home, apparently in the best of health, when he suddenly fell to
the ground. He died before medical aid arrived.

Apoplexy was the cause of death according to Coroner H.T. Madison,
who was called. There will be no inquest, he announced.

Hugh Cameron had been a resident of Leavenworth for thirty-five 
years or more and he was well and favorably known throughout the
city. He was a native of County Antrip, Ireland, but came to the
United States when he was fourteen years old.

For a number of years the deceased lived at Chicago where, with
his brother, he was engaged in the contracting business. Later he
moved to Kansas City, and shortly afterward, he came to Leavenworth,
where he was employed at the old sugar factory. Of late years Mr.
Cameron had been employed at the Federal penitentiary.

Besides the widow, Mrs. Hugh Cameron, he is survived by nine 
children. They are: Mrs. W.W. Woody, Kansas City; Mrs. A.L. Simmons
and Mrs. F.W. Hines, Leavenworth; William Cameron, of El Reno,
Okla.; Elmer, Eugene, Walter, John, and Lucille Cameron, of the
home address.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the J.J. O'Donnell
Undertaking company.

Joel A. Simmons, 87, a resident of Leavenworth for nearly 70 years, 
died Friday nigiht at St. John's Hospital following an extended illness. 
For many years Mr. Simmons was affiliated with the Abernathy Furniture Co. 
He was born Jan. 7, 1867 in Weston. He was a member of the Old Catherdral 
of Immaculate Conception Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Harold Ferguson, Terere Haute, Ind.,; one son, 
Albert L. Simmons, 520 Kiowa, a brother, Louis Simmons of Leavenworth, ten 
grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be Monday at 9 a.m. at the Old Catherdral with the 
Rev. Alexander Harvey officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in 
the Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Friends will assemble tonight at 8 p.m. at the Sumpter Funeral Chapel for 
reciation of the rosary.

JOHN McADAMS, 70, retired director of publications, documents and
conferences for the Organization of American States, died of cancer Oct.
4 at the Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. 

Mr. McAdams was born in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, and graduated from the
University of Puerto Rico. He earned a doctorate in political science at
Fordham University. 

He served in the Army in Central and South America from 1939 to 1949,
then moved to the Washington area and joined the OAS. He retired in
1979. 

A resident of Bethesda, Mr. McAdams was president of the board of
directors of the Bethesda Fire Department from 1958 until 1986. 

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth L., of Bethesda; two daughters,
Sister Elizabeth Barbara of Wilmington, Del., and Mary Ellen Folker of
Bethesda; three sons, Marine Corps Maj. John M. Jr., of Summerville,
S.C., Walter Leo and Michael Andrew McAdams, both of Bethesda; two
sisters, Etta M. Cook of Alexandria and Lydia M. Woods of Chambersburg,
Pa.; two brothers, James M., of Ossining, N.Y., and Joseph M., of
Anthony, Tex., and four grandchildren.

County Woman Is Dead at 73

Mrs. Katherine H. Kennedy Spent Life Within a Few Miles of Birthplace

Death came at 6:22 o'clock this morning at St. John's hospital
to Mrs. Katherine V. Hurley Kennedy, 73, wife of Lawrence Kennedy,
whose entire life was spent within a few miles of the place of her
birth, Lowemont. She had been critically ill only a short time.

Born March 5, 1868, Mrs. Kennedy was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
David Hurley, well-known early-day residents of Leavenworth County.
As a young woman she was a student at Saint Mary's academy, from
which she graduated with the class of 1887. Her marriage to Mr. 
Kennedy took place at the Easton Catholic church September 25, 1888.
She was a member of the St. Joseph's Church of the Valley, Mount
Olivet. She was widely known for her many charities. Mr. and Mrs.
Kennedy celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1938.

Residing on what is now highway 73, just atop Cody hill, Mrs.
Kennedy was witness to the great panorama that unfolded as the 
state developed. She saw the great wagon trains that flowed westward
and the camps where the stolid oxen stood. She lived to see airplanes
circling her home.

Besides the husband, Mrs. Kennedy is survived by three daughters,
Mrs. Jack Laird, 517 Marshall street; Mrs. George Bacon, Jr., 328
Columbia avenue; and Miss Celia Kennedy of the home; and five sons, 
Lawrence Kennedy, Jr., rural route four, city; Clarence Kennedy,
Wadsworth;

Lived All His Life on a Farm at Kickapoo - Funeral Is Pending

Lawrence Kennedy, Sr., 85 years of age, rural route four, died this morning
at St. John's hospital. Born May 5, 1858, he was a son of Lawrence and
Elizabeth Kennedy, early-day residents. He lived his entire life on the
same farm in Kickapoo township. He was a member of the St. Joseph's of the
Valley Catholic church. His wife, Mrs. Katherine Kennedy, died August 20, 1941.

Mr. Kennedy is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Jack Laird, 517 Marshall 
street; Mrs. George Bacon, 382 Columbia avenue; Miss Cecelia Kennedy of the
home address; five sons, Lawrence Kennedy, Jr., rural route four; Clarence 
Kennedy, 409 Shawnee street; Floyd Kennedy, Detroit, Mich.; Edwin Kennedy
of the home address; Harold Kennedy, United States Navy; two sisters, Mrs. 
Sally Shields, Bartlesville, Okla.; and Mrs. Elizabeth Payeur, rural route
four.

The body will remain at the Davis funeral chapel pending funeral arrangements.

Mary E. "Mae" Ferguson, 82, of 1102 Elizabeth Lane died at 2:30 p.m.
Saturday in Regional Hospital. She was a housewife. She was born April
30, 1905, in Leavenworth, Kan., to Joel Simmons and Mary Williams
Simmons. Her husband, Harold, died in 1984. Survivors include two
daughters, Joan Fentem of Rantoul, Ill. and Julia Elliott of Tolono,
Ill.; five sons, Harold J. Ferguson of Jacksonville, Fla., James A.
Ferguson of Champaign, Ill., Gerald J. Ferguson of Greenwood, Charles T.
Ferguson of Terre Haute and Robert Ferguson E. of Pittsboro; 21
grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was a member of St.
Benedicts Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society, Maryland Home Ec.
Club, Queen Bees and the Friendly Canasta Group. Prayer services are at
11:30 a.m. Monday in DeBaun Funeral Home with mass at noon in the
church. Burial is in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation in 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday
in the funeral home with rosary at 8 p.m.

Mary Ellen Simmons, 81, lifetime resident of Leavenworth, died Monday
morning at the St. John's Hospital following an extended illness.

She was born August 5, 1871 at Fort Leavenworth, a daughter of Peter
and Catharine Williams. On Oct. 15, 1890 in Leavenworth she was married
to Joel A. Simmons. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception church.

Surviving are her husband, Joel A. Simmons of the home, 516 Kiowa; one
daughter, Mrs. Harold Ferguson of Terre Haute, Ind.; one son, Albert L.
Simmons of 520 Kiowa; one sister, Mrs. Kate Ulness, 705 Ottawa; four
brothers, William Williams, 611 North Eighth; John Williams, 730 Cheyenne;
Martin Williams, 719 Cheyenne; and Edward Williams, 710 Pawnee. Also
10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Robert E. "Fergy" Ferguson

Robert E. "Fergy" Ferguson, 66, of Pittsboro and formerly of Terre Haute
died at 8:55 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, in his residence, following a
battle with cancer. He owned Fergy's Carpet Sales and Installation for
23 years. 

He was born Sept. 24, 1937, in Leavenworth, Kan., to Harold A. Ferguson
and Mae Simmons Ferguson. 

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Treadway Ferguson; one son, Jeffrey
Ferguson of Pittsboro; two daughters, Pam Alexander and Kim Volz and her
husband Mike, all of Pittsboro; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Joan
and Ernie Fentem of Rantoul, Ill., and Julie Elliott and her husband Ken
of Tolono, Ill.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Shirley
Ferguson of Valrico, Fla., and Charles and Linda Ferguson of Terre
Haute; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Harold
Ferguson and James Ferguson. 

He also was a brakeman for Conrail for 20 years, retiring in 1980. He
was a 1955 graduate of Honey Creek High School and was an Army veteran
stationed in Germany. He had resided in Pittsboro for the past 38 years.
He was a member of Brownsburg American Legion and Lebanon Elks Club. He
was an avid golfer and had once played three holes with Jack Nicklaus. 

Memorial services are 7 p.m. Thursday in Matthews Mortuary in
Brownsburg, with the Rev. John Gossett officiating. Cremation will
follow. Visitation is 4 p.m. until services Thursday. Mattox Funeral
Homes assisted with local arrangements. Memorial contributions may be
made to the American Cancer Society or Tri West Athletic Dept.

McAdams of Bethesda, MD and Michael McAdams of Olney, MD. Uncle of 10
nieces and nephews. Mr. McAdams is also survived by his great-niece and
