JR Macdonald Laboratory 1998 Summer Short Course: Introduction to Vacuum Physics and Technology: ---------------------------------------------- Problem 2.1) a) If leaning against beam line stands does not appear to be cause permanent dislocations (see problem 1.1), what may have caused the dislocation of Theo's telescope stand on the LINAC beam line L2L15? b) What would you do do reduce the likelyhood of future dislocations? Problem 2.2)a) How much does a 10 lbs detector sag if it is supported from a vertical plate with a four 6" long, 304 SS, 1/4-20 all-threaded rods, two 1" above and two 1" below the center line? b) Design a 6" long mount where a 10 lbs detector sags less than 0.02" and the tilt is less than 0.5 degrees. The detector has on its back three 1/4-20 taps on a 1" bolt circle. Make mechanical drawings for all required parts including the 6" CF-flange to be modified. Problem 2.3) a) How long does it take to evacuate a 1 gallon freezer bag with a 900 cu.in./min. vacuum pump to 100 mTorr? b) How long does it take to evacuate a 50 liter vacuum vessel with a 8 CFM pump to 100 mTorr?
