[662] The early generations of the Stroud family listed here should be treated with
caution. The family's link to the Strodes of the regicide is widely quoted, but
the authenticity of the sources is not yet clear to me. Note that this William
Strode is said to have died in 1666; that was a particularly devastating year for
London, when it suffered both the plague and the great fire.

"1968 Strode-Stroud Supplement"
Dorothy Lainson, 1968
"Sir William Strode; M. P. - b. 1589; d. 1666; M. Joan Barnett (Barnard). He was of
Barrington and London. Issue: William; John; Edward; Essex; Barnet (Barnard); George.
Barnett (or Barnard) and his wife were beheaded in the"Bloody Assize" but Edward escaped
with his invalid wife, 5 or 6 of his own children, his nephew Barnard, Jr., son of Barnett
(Barnard) the Martyr, the couple appointed to care for the orphaned Barnard and a young
man named Morgan Bryan."

"William Strode was born in 1589 at Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England, the son of William
Strode and Elizabeth Upton. He married Joan (or Joanne) Barnard in 1621 at Downside,
Shepton Mallet... William died on 20 December 1666 at Barrington and was buried at
Beminster, Dorset, England."
