[3813] The wife of Henry Howland, Senior is variously named as Anne or Margaret by various
authorities. She is sometimes also misidentified as Alice Ayres, who was actually part of a
different Howland family in Ely rather than the correct Howlands, of Fen Stanton. The Ely marriage
was in 1600, much too late for the accepted ages of John and his brothers. These errors seem
to have arisen when one Leon Clark Hills discovered Howland marriage records in Ely, a
discovery reported by Francis Stoddard in "The Truth About the Pilgrims". The Pligrim John
Howland Society reexamined the record and concluded that the Ely and Fen Stanton Howland
families were separate.

(As noted above, this article disentangles the Ely and Fen Stanton Howlands.)
"Henry Howland, of the Parish of Fenny Stanton, Huntingdonshire, yeoman, died at
Fen Stanton, 17 May 1635. His wife, Margaret, buried at Fen Stanton, 31 July 1629."

pp1-7: "The son of Henry and Margaret Howland, John Howland was born about 1592
and grew up in Fenstanton, a town nine miles northwest of Cambridge on the old Roman
road... His father, Henry Howland, yeoman, died in Fenstanton 17 May 1635, and his mother,
Margaret, was buried there 31 July 1629."

"John was born about 1592 to Henry and Margaret Howland of Fenstanton,
nine miles northeast of Cambridge, England. Elizabeth Tilley was the youngest
of several children born to John and Joan (Hurst) Tilley. She was baptized in
1607 in Henlow, Huntingdonshire, England. John Tilley and his family, and the
family of his brother Edward Tilley and wife Ann (Cooper), were members of
John Robinson's congregation in Leiden."

"The Will of Arthur Howland, Senior, of Marshfield"
George E. McCracken
NEHGR, v104, pp221-225 (Jul 1950)
"Arthur Howland, Sr., early an immigrant to Plymouth Colony and later a resident of
Marshfield, Mass., was a son, probably the eldest, of Henry Howland, Sr., buried in Fen
Stanton, Huntingtonshire, England, on 19 May 1635, and of his wife whose first name was
almost certainly Anne..."
